Spending countless hours on the internet. I learn that often people with type 4 hair struggle with wash day. I was once one of those people, until I learnt to be patient with my hair. I crafted my skill and stopped dreading wash day, to it being
“I wanna wash my hair” sorta day.
What I like to call a level 1 wash day is, washing your hair on the weekday. When you have school in the morning, but just can’t wait for the weekend. So we skip the prepoo and go straight for the wash.
Step 1: A Complete Soak and Wash

For the first 3-5 minutes, you completely drenching your hair so it obtains moisture. Then lather the shampoo and scrub your scalp. When done rake your fingers in-between your hair. When confronted by knots make sure to gently take them apart, starting at the end. When rinsing tilt your head in one direction to unsure no tangles. As I’m lazy after school, so skip the conditioner.
Step 2: DRY & Part

After washing your hair use something with a high percentage of cotton to dry it, often a t-shirt. This prevents knots and snagging with our hair. Using satin scrunchies split your hair into 6 parts for an easier detangle time

Step 3: Water+Detangle
Untying one of the sections split the hair into two. With a spray bottle drench your hair to hydrate it, water is type 4’s best friend. With that 1/2 add in a moisturizing detangler. Use your fingers and rake them through that piece of hair. Repeat this same action to the other part of hair.

Step 4: Twisting

Combine the 2 halves then create a loose twist. Assure to start at the root and finish all the way to the end. I use twist to keep my hair saturated, have the curls pop, and stretch it over night.
After these procedures put on a bonnet or silk scarf. With the steps and some time you can cut down on your washing schedule. Similar to other skills nothing comes natural. Your hair obviously isn’t one of them.
However after years of work things easier. Some start in the 3rd grade or at 25. Either way its hard work and the want to succeed. It’s easy to get frustrated and that that’s normal. I mean who doesn’t feel like that, I sure do.
Though there are things one can do to make it a bit easier.
